Other Information
AICAR, fully known as 5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide 1-β-D-ribofuranoside, also known as AICA Riboside or Acadesine, is an activator that permeable to AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a key protein in metabolic regulation. When the energy supply is insufficient, the ratio of AMP/ATP is up-regulated, and AMPK is activated to inhibit anabolism. AICAR activates AMPK but does not affect ATP, ADP and AMP levels. At the cellular or animal level, AICAR can promote non-insulin-dependent glucose uptake in skeletal muscle by activating AMPK. AICAR-induced skeletal muscle glucose uptake cannot be blocked by PI3K inhibitors.
Uses: Acadiaxin is currently undergoing a phase III clinical study to observe the preventive effect of intravenous infusion of the drug on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
